Another Month at WWWC

I keep finding notes I had written up, but can't find any pictures, sorry about that.

WEST WICHITA WINE CONNECTION        May Tasting

Sonoma County – the West Coast Tour continued

Opening Wine

2012 Alexander Valley Vineyard Dry Rose of Sangiovese, Alexander Valley, California

Light nose, color similar to watermelon. Nice floral hints and a berry nose – a dry Rose of berry and melon flavors. Very nice sipper.

2009 Buena Vista Pinot Noir, Carneros, California

Nice light color; cherry and berry nose. Flavor echoes the nose with additional strawberry flavors. Not a deep wine, but a nice Pinot.

2005 Sebatiani Secolo (Red Blend), Sonoma, California

Closed nose initially, opened over time to bright red berries. Flavors of cherry cola, dark berries and a hint of earthiness. Fully aged at this point, little aftertaste, not tannins left.

2010 Alexander Valley Vineyard Cabernet Franc, Alexander Valley, California

Nose very unique, initially floral and herb – opening to lavender. Flavor is lavender, with hints of cola and cedar. Very nice wine with a moderate long finish.

2009 Gnarly Vines Zinfandel, Dry Creek, California

Nice fruity nose – flavors of cherry cola, raspberry and hints of black pepper. Little tame for a Dry Creek Zin, but overall pleasant.

Until next time, keep popping those corks and I’ll meet you behind the grape vines.

Bordeaux at Auburn Spirits

On Thursday, September 24, 2013, Auburn Spirits held a Bordeaux tasting for newly released wines.   Seven wines were tasted – one white and six red, along with snacks of cheese, bread, crackers and grapes.  Additionally, each person got to keep the Riedl glass they used to taste the wines.  Here were the wines (Prices are normal retail).

1.       Château Marac Bordeaux Blanc | 2011 | Grand Vin de Bordeaux         $15.99

This white had a nice nose, floral bouquet with hints of tropical fruits. The flavor had a big acid flux, almost a pucker on first sip, but it balanced nicely into flavors of green apple, fig and tropical hints. Smooth finish, this is a polished wine that doesn’t overpower but would compliment many dishes, like chicken.

2.       Château Les Combes | 2009 | Bordeaux Supérieur                                 $15.99

Decent nose of fruit and bramble – color was a little light, more Burgundy than Bordeaux.  The wine had hints of lilac/lavender and bramble with light red berries. Aftertaste was minimal; this is a beginner’s Bordeaux or a good lunch wine at a bistro.  Not a bad wine, just not a memorable one.

3.       Château Fage | 2010 | Graves de Vayres                                                  $19.99

Much darker than the previous wine – a bigger nose of dark fruits, mostly berry. The flavor echoed the nose, dark berry, a mossy woods type of flavor; chewier wine, some tannins with a long aftertaste. Maybe a touch extracted in flavor, would age nicely – 3 to 5 years.

4.       Terra Burdigala Roc de Jean Lys | 2010 | Bordeaux Supérieur               $19.99

Nice dark color, nose a little closed in the beginning, opened up to berry and plums. This wine had a big mouthfeel, full of plum, currant, hints of rose and red berry flavors with a nice long aftertaste. Not heavily tannic, but well structured and would age well for a number of years. Very nice bottle of wine.

Does the name Stephane Derenoncourt ring a bell?  If you have enjoyed our internet specials in the past, it probably does.  We have offered at least 3 wines that have been under his name!  In 2010 he was dubbed by Wine Spectator as the "world's hottest winemaker!"

For this project, Derenoncourt coupled with Francois Thienpont.  Thienpont's resume consists of work at top Bordeaux estates such as; Vieux Chateau Certan and Chateau Le Pin.  These are some of the finest wines the right bank Bordeaux has to offer!  Now, you may be asking yourself..."if these guys are so good, why are they producing value Bordeaux?"

Answer:

They created Roc de Jean Lys simply to make the fruits of their high standards and practices accessible. They gathered together a group of winegrowers who believed in the same high standards of quality; respect for nature, low yields and wines with real authenticity. Together they seek to produce not only one of the best values in Bordeaux, but throughout the world.

 5.       Château de Malromé | 2009 | Bordeaux Supérieur                                 $22.49

Nice dark color, big nose of red berry and dark fruits.  Wine is tasty, chewy, tanic with big red fruits. Touch of pucker in the first taste, balances out to the fruit, raisin and cigar box. Tannins on the long finish, worth holding on to for several years, although it is tempting to drink now with a slab of red meat.

6.       Château Greysac | 2009 | Medoc                                                              $27.99

Dark color – the wine has a good nose, cedar and red fruits. Good mouthfeel, dark berry, cedar, some herb. Nicely balanced wine, good with food and will age a little while – not too tannic.

7.       Château Les Grands Maréchaux | 2009 | Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux      $27.99

Very nice deep color, big fruity nose.  Flavors of raspberry, cedar, black cherry and hints of licorice. Nice mid-palate, pleasant long aftertaste without a lot of tannins. Really well built wine with great aging potential. One of those “wow” moments with this wine, would be a great bottle years from now.

Just Wining a little more

Remember when Rosemount Shiraz was one of the biggest wine s around? The quality dipped, we got bored with the cough syrup mentality and bottle languished on the shelf. I went ahead and tried a couple bottles from Rosemount and I say that the wines are better – not super, but good for the price. Still very fruit forward, not wines with aging potential, but decent qualities of the grape.  The acid is in balance making them pretty good every day pizza and spaghetti wines.

2010 Rosemount Shiraz Australia                                                                                              $6.99
The Shiraz was better than the last time I tasted it. Moderate nose with jammy, up front fruit and some aftertaste. Went well with a pizza. Not a bad bottle to have around for a weeknight or the after several at a party.

2009 Rosemount Shiraz Cabernet Australia                                                                          $6.99
I always kin of liked the blends better, even though the fruit is sourced from all over Australia. Nose had a tweak of cabernet, bell pepper and cassis. The flavor was dominant with the shiraz but the cab added a nice mouthfeel and slightly longer aftertaste. Was a good wine with pasta and red sauce.

2009 Pennywise Petite Sirah California                                                                                   $7.99
I’m a sucker for Petite sirah, can’t help myself. However, this is not one of the better examples. For about the same price as consistent Bogle or Concannon, this wine lacked the big mouthfeel you expect from PS. Wasn’t a bad wine, but just not very fulfilling, almost a little hollow in the mid palate.  Almost forgot about the wine before I finished it. Can’t really recommend it, even at this price.

2010 Casa LaPostelle Cabernet Sauvignon Rapel Valley, Chile                                       $9.99
Since Argentina made such noise in recent years, people forget how good some of the wines are from Chile. This was a well made Cabernet, with nice aromas and a good mouthfeel of dark red berry, cassis and hints of vegetable. Decent aftertaste, went very well with a steak dish.  Very good producer, I’d pick this up any time.

2007 Onix Priorat Spain                                                                                                                  $11.99
This used to be my favorite ten dollar wine from Priorat. It’s gone up, but still affordable.  Great tempanillo, dark in color with a fragrant nose. The flavors were long and the mouthfeel was fulfilling. Red berries, hints of tar and spice, I would serve this wine in most any Spanish tasting.  Priorat is an up and coming area but most of the wines are over my price range.

OK, I'll be back - keep popping those corks and I'll meet you out behind the grapevines!
